By Roxanne Reid There are lots of things I like. Africa, travel, wildlife, food – hey, even some people. Then there are things I dislike, such as when people take half-baked ideas to the media without first checking their facts. Let me give you an example. By Roxanne Reid He was a whirlwind of energy, sand flying as he dug in search of creatures that had left tiny hints of their presence, wiggling his bare feet into the sand where it was cooler than the hot surface. This was Tommy Collard leading us into the dunes of the Dorob National Park outside Swakopmund, Namibia, proving that the dunes are more alive than you think. By Roxanne Reid A favourite thing to do on any visit to South Africa is to visit Cape Town penguins at Boulders Beach, Simon’s Town. The best place is from the boardwalk between Seaforth and Boulders, where you can get fairly close as they waddle around in their dinner jackets, without disturbing them. By Roxanne Reid The Botswana government has sold rights to frack for shale gas in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, one of Africa's largest protected conservation zones. Do you love the Kgalagadi as much as I do? Are you as outraged by this as I am? Read on to find out how we can work together to stop fracking in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in Botswana. By Roxanne Reid When we visited AfriCat, the non-profit foundation that’s working to conserve Namibia's large carnivores, we didn’t expect to come face to face with the Adams family. But don’t go imagining black hair and pale skin; AfriCat’s siblings – Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday and Pugsley – are hairy with spots. They’re cheetahs who never knew their mother. By Roxanne Reid Gansbaai and De Kelders, about 45km southwest of Hermanus on the southern Cape coast, are just a two- or three-hour drive east of Cape Town. You might think this area is all about the ocean, whale watching and great white sharks, but you’d be wrong. It’s also where you’ll find the captivating Platbos indigenous forest in the Overberg. By Roxanne Reid Ever been excited as you approach a game reserve somewhere in South Africa, only to be horrified at how many animals you see splattered and dead on the road? Here’s how you can help reduce roadkill by becoming part of a citizen science research project. By Roxanne Reid Not everyone is madly enthusiastic about history. They’ll wave off philosopher George Santayana’s words: ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.’ I’m not one of them. So when I went to the Overberg and found three museums within spitting distance of each other, I was hooked. Here’s why you should visit these museums in Swellendam. By Roxanne Reid For Earth Hour this year, the World Wide Fund for Nature in South Africa (WWF-SA) urged us as consumers to consider the choices we make about food, water and energy, and the effect our choices have on the environment. It highlighted 10 facts you should know about water that might change the way you use this precious resource. |
