There are many beautiful lodges in Namibia, but Zambezi Mubala Lodge in the Zambezi region (formerly called Caprivi) is one I’ll always remember for being something different. With views of the Zambezi River everywhere you look, it’s far from a desert landscape. It's more reminiscent of lodges downstream at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, with sunsets, boat cruises, fishing and a birding safari to keep you happy.

By Roxanne Reid We were enjoying sundowners in the flood plain of the Chobe River, with a huge herd of elephants drinking on the other side of the river. Although we were in Namibia, they were in Botswana’s Chobe National Park. It was a timeless moment to hold in our hearts forever. Discover Chobe River Camp in Zambezi region, Namibia, and things to do there. By Roxanne Reid A vast, diverse continent of 30.3 million square kilometres, Africa is a boiling pot of cultures, traditions and languages, of wildlife and natural phenomena. From adventure activities, safaris, deserts, rivers and snow-capped peaks, Africa has it all. I asked some travel bloggers to share 27 of the best African countries to visit for travel adventure. Did we include your favourite? By Roxanne Reid Your first sight of the Namushasha River Villa – a floating oasis moored on a channel on the Kwando River in the Zambezi (Caprivi) region of Namibia – will have you gaping in wonder. You’ll be chuffed to stay on this romantic craft surrounded by water channels and water lilies next to a national park. It's one of Namibia’s superb Zambezi lodges. By Roxanne Reid Life should be made of moments like these. We’re on the deck overlooking the natural bush of northern Namibia at dawn. A pink sunrise unravels through the clouds as a jackal yelps in the distance and a spurfowl chuck-chucks nearby. We’re at Anderssons at Ongava Game Reserve bordering Etosha; our day of wild immersion has just begun. By Roxanne Reid There aren’t many places in the world where you can shower with an elephant before enjoying dinner around a campfire while live music pulsates with energetic township vibe. Not unless you stay at Etosha Safari Camp 10km south of Etosha National Park’s Andersson Gate in Namibia. By Roxanne Reid Outside it’s all Namibian desert – sand, wide blue skies, red dunes, black-backed jackals and springbok. Inside are Hollywood touches that would make Zsa Zsa Gabor or Marilyn Monroe feel at home. Think pink ostrich feather ‘trees’, pink neon lights in the bar, and rose quartz lamps. This is The Desert Grace, one of the most stylish Sossusvlei lodges. By Roxanne Reid Luderitz, Namibia, is wedged between the Namib Desert and the icy Atlantic, a colourful hamlet in a windswept landscape. To get there you must drive 340km from Keetmanshoop on a straight road that takes you through forbidden diamond territory. When you crest the last dune, the town appears out of a barren landscape like a mirage, as misplaced as any tiny German hamlet could be. By Roxanne Reid The stories of Africa’s trees are also tales of its people and animals, from Herman Charles Bosman’s withaak to Rudyard Kipling’s Limpopo fever tree. Think baobabs that are 6 000 years old or marula trees long believed to have elephants stumbling away drunk. These 10 stories about trees in Africa root out the fables, facts and fictions about some remarkable African trees. By Roxanne Reid Which are the best African safari holidays? If you love wildlife, these 7 parks everyone should visit will be on your wish list. They span 7 countries in southern and East Africa. I’ll tell you what to expect, best time to visit, things you can do there, and some ins and outs to be aware of when planning your safari. |
