Yeah, right! So where were they when we passed by, peering avidly into the bushes, two days in a row, desperate to see these 'painted dogs' that we haven't seen up close for more than a decade?
The sightings boards at Letaba and Satara camps are a pack of lies too. They claim that a number of people have seen leopard and lion, even rhino, on roads that we travelled today without seeing more than a few elephant, a herd of fly-plagued buffalo and a clutch of zebra. Are these people liars, desperate to create a good impression in some kind of ‘I’m cleverer than you’ game? Or are they just luckier than us, catching a glimpse of these elusive beasts crossing the road before they disappear again into the thicket?
All I know is that after good rains the bush is particularly lush and dense, making sightings difficult and photography all but impossible. An elephant could be lurking six feet from the road and we wouldn’t see him until we’re right on top of him – a little unnerving for both of us.
