Just outside the popular fishing village of Struisbaai, the entrance to the little town of L’Agulhas is guarded by Spookdraai, or Ghost Corner. This is the starting point of a hiking trail that explores fynbos, birdlife and historical points of interest along this stunning section of the southern Cape coast.

The Meisho Maru may not be the most historically significant wreck along the southern Cape coastline, but it’s photogenically rusty and conveniently close inshore for those without telephoto lenses that cost about the same as a small car. I can jabber on about the chalets on stilts in the Agulhas National Park like a lovesick teenager (read my guide to Agulhas National Park here). But if the sights and sounds of the sea aren’t your cup of tea and you want a totally different experience, you can book a renovated old farmhouse a few kilometres inland. By Roxanne Reid
About 90 minutes from Cape Town, in a remote wilderness of steep kloofs and pristine rivers near Kleinmond, South Africa, we’re surrounded by more plant species than you’ll find in any similar-sized area on the planet. It's a botanical wonderland at the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. |
