‘There!’ His voice is a loud whisper intense with excitement. We follow his pointed finger, peering intently through the tree branches. Nothing. He starts to explain and we trace the trunk of the tree, the branch jutting out ... and then suddenly there’s a flash of brown wings and it’s gone again. We’re birding in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, and this is something special.

Duba Explorers Camp for an Okavango Delta safari

We’re walking across a low bridge over a water channel to Duba Explorers Camp. Elephants are browsing in the reeds to our right, a striped kingfisher perched on the railing. On a raised deck ahead are the smiling faces of Duba’s staff waiting to welcome us. It’s the start of another Okavango Delta safari here in Botswana and we really couldn’t be happier.

The wildlife is superb, from elephants, big cats and wild dogs to giraffe and red lechwe. And the professional guides are clued-up and enthusiastic to share the wonders of their environment.

We were relaxed. The pressure was off. The day before we’d had the best sighting of our lives so now we had no expectations. Whatever our game drive brought us, we’d already experienced the wildlife wonders of Botswana’s Okavango Delta here on the Chitabe concession south-east of Chief’s Island.

Spending a morning poling through the Okavango Delta in a mokoro with guide Spongy Makgetho was one of the best moments of our Botswana safari. From our perch just above the water level we floated among water lilies and watched fish eagles, African jacanas, malachite kingfishers and a long reed frog. We also found out more about the guide who likes to learn.

Okavango Delta, Botswana. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a mass of water channels, floodplains and islands teeming with wildlife. It’s also a wilderness far from civilisation, so everything you need to run a camp there – from soap to fresh food ingredients – has to be flown in on a small plane.
