There’s a special magic in the red sands of the Kalahari that you miss if you fixate exclusively on its superstars – lions, leopards, and cheetahs. Yes, these big cats are fascinating to watch, especially when they interact with each other or with prey. But if you’re screeching from one big cat sighting to another, you’ll miss some of the deeper satisfaction that comes from slowing down and tuning into a quieter world – the realm of small animals, tracks, plants, or a flash of butterfly wings.

‘There!’ His voice is a loud whisper intense with excitement. We follow his pointed finger, peering intently through the tree branches. Nothing. He starts to explain and we trace the trunk of the tree, the branch jutting out ... and then suddenly there’s a flash of brown wings and it’s gone again. We’re birding in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, and this is something special.

On our first afternoon game drive from DumaTau Camp in the Linyanti, Botswana, we saw wild dogs and a leopard. We were beyond chuffed. We teased our guide that he’d never equal or better that on our next drive. But nature had other ideas, showing us the raw power of lions.

Duba Explorers Camp for an Okavango Delta safari

We’re walking across a low bridge over a water channel to Duba Explorers Camp. Elephants are browsing in the reeds to our right, a striped kingfisher perched on the railing. On a raised deck ahead are the smiling faces of Duba’s staff waiting to welcome us. It’s the start of another Okavango Delta safari here in Botswana and we really couldn’t be happier.
