This is an African travel and wildlife blog, where content about anything else is out of place. But given that South Africa is halfway through 10 days of national mourning, it would be strange if I didn’t note the passing of former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela on the evening of 5 December 2013. Here’s a short tribute to Mandela, in words and pictures.
So it’s appropriate that South African Tourism should have released this tribute video above (with thanks to the Mandela Centre of Memory and Rex Features/INPRA for images and footage).
Although we mourn Mandela’s passing, we should celebrate his life too. He taught us the value of humanity and leadership and that none of us is free until we're all free. Let’s always remember two of his most powerful comments:
Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.
To be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.
