For instance, there’s the issue of Royal Dutch Shell and others wanting to frack for shale gas in the Karoo, mucking it up in the process (see my blogs here and here).
Then there’s the issue of developers and SANParks management wanting to overcommercialise our flagship Kruger National Park by building at least six thudding great hotels at places like Malelane and Skukuza – to begin with.
And then there’s the whole issue of rhino poaching of stupendous proportions, a bloody but apparently lucrative business for those on the wrong side of the law. And we’ve seen over the last year or so how these include not only lowlife criminals of the ordinary and organised Big Business variety, but wildlife vets and even (it’s whispered) diplomats. More about this in my next post.
So forgive me if I don’t glue myself to the television today to watch Will and Kate’s overblown wedding, even if it has been dubbed the ‘biggest reality show’ on earth.
I wish them well, I really do. I just have much more important things to think about.
