We noticed Tredici just below the highway as we swept past on a road trip some months ago, so this time we planned to stop and investigate further. Hubby is a lover of Wimpy bacon-and-egg breakfasts, which he only gets on a road trip. I’m not. Insisting we stop at Tredici in the Overberg was my way of finding a more inspiring alternative.
Boy, was I glad we did. The place is a foodie’s delight, encompassing a small shop selling biscotti and chocolate treats and fun little bits of kitchen kit, as well as a deli, patisserie, bakery and restaurant overflowing with yummy treats, both savoury and sweet.

Best of all was the chance for a non-Wimpy breakfast in elegant surroundings. I enjoyed my mushrooms on wholewheat ciabatta with oven-roasted baby tomatoes and rocket, while hubby went for the bacon and scrambled egg on ciabatta.
For sophisticated foodies, this is the equivalent of being a kid in a candy store
There were salad and sandwich choices too, featuring ingredients like Gruyere, caramelised onions, ricotta, mango compote – a world away from the ghastly plastic processed cheese of a Wimpy toasted sarmie.

And, as someone who often finds cappuccino served in local restaurants a bit insipid without the strong coffee punch, I was pleased to be kicked in the teeth by the robust flavour of Tredici’s cappuccino.
Tredici claims to be all about ‘sumptuous simplicity’, artisan baking and handmade delicacies using fresh local produce. It boasts that it offers ‘the best European cuisine personalised with African flair’.

Linger over breakfast, lunch or coffee, or browse the deli and patisserie for something to take away with you
Tredici is the Italian word for thirteen, or baker’s dozen. It’s this relatively new restaurant’s way of letting you know that it hopes to offer you a bit more than you might expect.
What a treat when, like me, you might have been expecting Wimpy same-old same-old.
