Leopards have to eat, right? But sometimes you can't help rooting for the underdog when predator meets prey. Watch how a wildebeest mum saves her calf from a grisly death at the jaws of a leopard in Kenya.
The footage was captured by Brit Kathy Farrell while on holiday in Kenya's Mara North Conservancy. She paid tribute to guide Benjamin Kaluena, who spotted the leopard and thought it might try to take down the young calf: ‘Benjamin put us in the right place at the right time.’
Small calves are easily taken by a leopard. But not this time.
As you see in the video, at first the mother ran away from the predator – an instinctive response. But when she saw that the cat had grabbed her calf, she turned and in a show of either bravery or foolhardiness, head-butted it away.
The leopard, obviously not used to this sort of treatment from a lowly wildebeest, just slunk away. Wildebeest schnitzel wasn’t going to be on his lunch menu that day.
