Call me crabby but I can’t really see why cycling has a place in the Kgalagadi, where the major concern should be conservation. I’m also deeply dubious of the claim that a mountain bike race down the dry riverbed will raise funds for conservation. Let me tell you why.

I think I have found what I’m looking for. Mkhambathi Nature Reserve on the Eastern Cape's Wild Coast is one of the most photogenic, pristine and priceless places I have been on my Year in the Wild, says guest blogger Scott Ramsay. The Wildlife ACT Fund Painted Dog Project conducts research on the social behaviour of painted dogs (or wild dogs) and how this affects the success of the reintroduction strategy for the species. As a researcher for Wildlife ACT, guest blogger Shannon Chapman has collected data from all painted dog introductions in KwaZulu-Natal for the past two years. She explains why it's so challenging. By Roxanne Reid In an earlier blog, Kgalagadi developments: have your say, I chuntered on about the proposed developments in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (KTP). I laid out my concerns regarding roads, refuse, sewage, and the quality and supply of water, saying these should be addressed before any further developments were considered. On our trip to the park in May, the validity of these concerns was amply demonstrated. By Roxanne Reid Just around the corner from the more famous and weirdly compelling Owl House in Nieu Bethesda, near Graaff-Reinet in the Karoo, is the Kitching Fossil Exploration Centre, which depicts the fossil history of the area. South Africa lost 80 rhinos to poachers in the first two months of 2012. [By 5 April it was 159.] At this rate, we may lose 600 this year - significantly up from 13 just five years ago. The debate over how best to combat this butchery rages on. But how much of the outrage is sentiment and how much is emotion that translates into useful action? Read what the African Conservation Trust's top man has to say. By Roxanne Reid Developments are in the wind at the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the Northern Cape, South Africa. If you love that place as much as I do, you need to know about them so you can have your say and make your voice heard in the public participation process currently under way. By Roxanne Reid
I've looked at the thorny problem of rhino poaching in South Africa before, but now another possible solution has been suggested and could do with an airing. |
