We’re at a cottage in the Anysberg Nature Reserve just before the sun slips behind the koppie, its last rays filtering through the tree branches. We watch the hills turn pink as we sip red wine and enjoy the silence. There are no distractions, just the sense of adjusting to nature's rhythm; that’s what Anysberg is all about.

By Roxanne Reid We arrived at the Karoo Art Hotel when the afternoon sunlight was not kind. The hotel looked as though its glory days were long past, its present faded and faintly sad. But when we stepped inside and took time to look beyond the surface, its quirkiness crept into our hearts. By Roxanne Reid If you’re ever in the Karoo, deep in the heart of South Africa, make time to chat with random people you meet. Guesthouse owners, restaurant staff, shopkeepers, even people you bump into on the street. You’ll be captivated by their stories of what strange things happen in the Karoo. By Roxanne Reid Stand outside the grey-and-white limewashed building that is Hantam Huis in Calvinia, Karoo, and it’s as if you’ve dropped through a wormhole into the 1850s. Except for that plaque that declares it a National Monument. That wouldn’t have been there 160 years ago when it was first built. Don’t hurry past; stop and explore like we did. By Roxanne Reid Sutherland in the Karoo is well known as a destination for lovers of stars and snow. Of course there are lots of other things to do there that have nothing to do with either (see 15 things to do and see in Sutherland). But where to stay in Sutherland while you explore? By Roxanne Reid The sun had set and we were sipping wine and eating farm bread by candlelight at Stuurmansfontein near Carnarvon – a corbelled house in the Karoo, now an unusual guesthouse. It felt as if we’d fallen through a wormhole into the past. By Roxanne Reid John Steinbeck said about travel that you go, not so much to see but to tell afterward. I travel for both those reasons. I’m endlessly curious and love experiencing new things I couldn’t in my own back yard, but I also enjoy sharing those experiences through this blog. Here are my 7 travel highlights of 2013. I love books almost as much as I love travel and wildlife, so the chance to combine the passions is always a treat. We can’t spend every minute on the road on in the bush, but books are a fabulous substitute, a way to travel vicariously, no matter where you are. Here’s my pick of 5 books about travel and wildlife that are definitely worth a look. By Roxanne Reid Travelling from Sutherland to Carnarvon in the Karoo, we drove into Williston simply because it was a point on the map we’d never been to before. We discovered it’s not the most promising destination overall, but well worth it just to visit the Williston Mall. By Roxanne Reid We’ve visited the Tankwa Karoo National Park before and have succumbed to its charms whether camping rough or staying in the charming old-style Elandsberg chalets. But this time, in early October, the park treated us to a colourful display of wild flowers in the Tankwa Karoo that topped all our previous visits. |
